Former Montserrado District #8 Representative Acarous Gray has spoken out against the demolition of homes and market stalls in Sinkor, blaming current leadership for failing to defend residents.
In a strongly worded statement, Gray argued that such actions would not have occurred during his tenure as lawmaker. He placed responsibility on the current representative, alleging a close alignment with the Executive Branch that, in his view, has weakened advocacy for constituents.
“This would never have happened under my watch,” Gray stated, adding that the present leadership lacks the courage to challenge decisions affecting vulnerable residents.
The demolitions, which have affected both residential structures and informal market stalls, have raised concerns about the welfare of those displaced. According to Gray, many of the affected individuals—particularly women selling goods along street corners—depend on such activities as their primary source of income.
“Our market women are out there because of extreme hardship,” he said. “That’s the only means they have to feed their families and send their children to school.”
Gray further lamented that victims of the demolitions have been left without sufficient support or intervention from their elected representative. He described the situation as a failure of leadership and accountability at the district level.
The demolition exercise has sparked wider public debate over urban management, economic hardship, and the role of elected officials in safeguarding the livelihoods of their constituents.
