MONROVIA, Liberia – Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung has asked the public, media institutions, and other organizations to refrain from addressing him by the honorary title “Doctor” despite recently receiving an Honorary Doctorate (Honoris Causa) from Cuttington University.
In a statement issued following the award, Vice President Koung expressed profound appreciation to the university for the recognition, describing the honorary degree as an exceptional honor. He said he is deeply grateful for the distinction bestowed upon him.
However, the Vice President noted that he has chosen not to use the honorary title while serving in public office. He stated that he will only begin using the title after concluding his tenure in public service.
“I respectfully request that members of the public, the media, and all institutions abstain from addressing me by the title ‘Doctor’ while I remain in public office,” Koung said, adding, “I’m grateful.”
Cuttington University conferred the Honorary Doctorate (Honoris Causa) upon Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung during its 64th commencement exercises on Saturday, June 27, 2026, in recognition of his contributions to national service. The Vice President’s request has since drawn attention for emphasizing humility and restraint in the use of honorary titles while holding public office.
