The Liberia National Fire Service (LNFS) recorded 195 fire incidents between January to July this year, with three deaths and an estimated US$2.1 million worth of properties destroyed.
LNFS Director General, Col. G. Warsuwah Barvoul Sr. said investigation established that
most of the fire outbreaks were caused by faulty electrical connections and the use of substandard wire.
Col. Barvoul said as a result of these fire incidents, about 1,043 persons were rendered homeless, including 432 children, 364 female and 247 male.
He said most of the fire incidents occurred within Montserrado County.
The LNFS Director General made the disclosure at the Ministry of Information regular press briefing held Thursday, August 27, 2026.
Col. Barvoul said most communities especially in Montserrado County lack access roads, which sometimes makes it difficult for Fire Trucks to easily and timely respond to fire emergencies upon requests.
He also spoke against persistent false Fire alarms, by some unscrupulous persons, who he said often called the Fire Department reporting fire outbreaks and requesting Fire trucks, which now requires authentication before dispatching fire trucks.
Col. Barvoul cautioned the public against raising false Fire alarms, because according to him, to mobilize fire fighters and dispatch fire trucks, are costly to the department.
Meanwhile, the LNFS Boss has disclosed the government’s approval of a five-year strategic plan to decentralize the National Fire Service to timely response to fire outbreaks in communities nationwide.
Col. Barvoul said the strategic plan under the AAID is being implemented, with Fire Trucks stationed in Kakata, Gbarnga, Sanniquelle and Buchanan, while Monserrado has five stations with fire trucks.
