The overwhelming response by young Liberians to the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ Vacation Job Program (VJP) has underscored the country’s growing youth unemployment challenge, forcing authorities to close the application process earlier than initially scheduled.
The Ministry announced that applications for the 2026 Vacation Job and Community Service Program are now officially closed after receiving more than 8,000 applications for just 3,500 available placements across Liberia’s 15 counties.
The application period, which was originally scheduled to run from July 1 to July 7, 2026, attracted thousands of applicants within a short period, exceeding the Ministry’s expected threshold. Earlier, the Ministry had disclosed that over 6,000 applications had been received in less than 48 hours and warned that the online portal would automatically close once it reached 7,000 applications, even if that occurred before the official deadline.
In announcing the closure, the Ministry thanked young Liberians for their overwhelming participation and encouraged applicants to follow its official communication channels for updates on the selection process.
“The response has been nothing short of incredible. Over 8,000 young Liberians applied for the Vacation Job and Community Service Program, with 3,500 beneficiaries set to be selected across all 15 counties,” the Ministry stated.

Officials described the initiative as more than just a temporary employment opportunity, emphasizing that it represents an investment in Liberia’s future by providing young people with work experience and opportunities to serve their communities.
The unprecedented demand for the program has also drawn attention to the country’s high youth unemployment rate, as thousands of qualified young people competed for a limited number of temporary jobs. The figures reflect the urgent need for sustainable employment opportunities and expanded youth empowerment programs across Liberia.
The Ministry is expected to announce the list of successful applicants and the next steps in the selection process in the coming days.
